Alan lives and works as an artist in the town of Newstead in Central Victoria. He was educated at the Bendigo Institute of Technology (Diploma in Visual Arts, majoring in painting), the Melbourne School of Art, Design & Photography and Oakleigh Horticultural College (Trade Certificate in Nursery & Gardening). Alan's paintings reflect his interest in the natural environment and are inspired by his surroundings in Victoria's goldfields region. His work is held in private collections in Australia, the USA and Europe.
Alan has participated in group exhibitions at Herons in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 for the Castlemaine State Festival. He has previously exhibited paintings at Dudley House in Bendigo, Cascade Print Room and the Bold Gallery. His photographs and paintings have been published in The Age (Melbourne), The Whole Person (Melbourne), The Daily Mirror (UK), The Standard (London) and the Castlemaine Mail.

In 2013 Alan was shortlisted in the for the Hawkesbury Art Prize, NSW.
In 2013 Alan was shortlisted in the Len Fox Painting Award at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum.
In 2012 - finalist in the Hawkesbury Art Prize, NSW.
In 2012 - finalist in the Calleen Art Award at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery, NSW.
In 2011, he was shortlisted for the Whyalla Art Prize in South Australia.
In 2011, he was a finalist in the Len Fox Painting Award at the Castlemaine Art Gallery.

In 2008 Alan was shortlisted for the Castlemaine Art Gallery's Community Art Prize called 'Exploring Themes of Loss and Grief'.
